Players will be able to take in-game currencies such as OWL tokens, competitive points, and credits from Overwatch to Overwatch 2 when the sequel launches in October this year.

In an AMA on Reddit, Overwatch commercial lead Jon Spector confirmed currencies will transfer over to the sequel, although there is something of a catch.

Although credits from the original title will be pulled over, Overwatch 2 will feature a new virtual currency that will serve as the primary form of in-game tender. That means there will be things in Overwatch 2 that won't be purchasable with credits from its predecessor.

The dev team promised to share a more detailed explanation of how currency will work further down the line, but also reiterated that loot boxes won't be transitioned into Overwatch 2.

That means any unopened loot boxes will be automatically opened before the sequel launches, letting players receive all of their contents directly.

Earlier this year, Blizzard announced it would be spitting up Overwatch 2's PvE and PvP modes, marking the first time the studio has debuted a title using a staged rollout.
