Today the folks at Firaxis Games took to Twitter to confirm that Civilization VI has passed the 1 million players mark, seemingly confirming speculation earlier this week that the game had already sold a million units.

That's not bad for a game released two weeks ago today (October 21st) and it's notable in light of the fact that the last mainline Civilization game, Civ V, is still among the top 10 most-played games on Steam

Now Civilization VI has joined it on that chart suggesting that -- at least for the moment --  the Civ team has not done what Civ producer Dennis Shirk once told Gamasutra every Civ team fears: spoiled the franchise.

"Every designer coming in, they have to walk that fine line," Shirk said. "'Will I upset the apple cart this time around?'"

Our full interview with Shirk is well worth reading if you're curious about how Firaxis changed up (but not too much!) the game design formula for the latest Civilization.
