Mobile and social game developer Big Viking Games has netted $21.75 million in funding to create "next generation HTML5 experiences."

The cash injection comes from Canadian businesses, Royal Bank of Canada, Export Development Canada, and BDC Capital.

Big Viking, perhaps best known for creating browser-based social game, YoWorld, will now look to raise a further $60 million dollars to build out its portfolio of HTML5 mobile games.

The studio says it plans to use the funds to improve its production capabilities, form partnerships, and make hires in key areas.

"We truly believe that HTML5 is the future, and the indications from the industry are definite signals that we are on the right track," said Big Viking CEO and co-founder, Albert Lai.

"Four years ago, people thought we were making a mistake by investing millions of dollars into HTML5 technology, but we always felt this was inevitable and knew we had to be properly positioned when it finally happened."
