Twitter

In my personal opinion,i feel a lot of gamers tweet several times daily on twitter. Some people  tweet about 10 - 15 times
a day at least. The main problem seems to be getting them to view your tweets among the massive amount of  tweets
on the chat network. Most of the time i post a tweet i dont usually include links because people don't click on them a lot most of the time.
Even without links you can still let gamers know details about your game and then most of them could decide to get it while browsing various game stores or if they find it during a sale.

Here are some effective ways to get a lot of eyes on your tweets.

Your tweets should contain
.Concept art-post gameplay pictures
.Good looking character pictures from the game
.Beautiful scenery levels in the game
.Boss fights.
.Trailer
.Picture of the team working on the project
.Relevant hashtags

A lot of people tend to stop and read a tweet if a picture or video is attached to it.
Also avoid using hastags like #gamedev #indiegamedev as this only draws attention of other developers not gamers.

Facebook

A lot of people tend to check their facebook walls daily even if they dont post anything.
The best way to reach gamers on facebook is by

.Facebook ads
.Facebook groups

Posting on facebook gamers groups will help increase visibilty of your game.Look for active groups full of active members to join .
Posting on your personnal wall only displays to your friends and family who arent your primary target.
