Austin-based GameSalad, maker of an accessible game-creation tool aimed at non-programmers, has received an additional $6.1 million in funding from a variety of venture capital firms. The drag-and-drop GameSalad Creator, which is available in free and paid professional versions, has been used to create over 8,500 games iOS and web games. Thirty of these games have broken the top 100 on the iTunes App Store, according to the company, including titles like Gravonaut and Tumble Blocks. The new funding will be used to expand the company's staff and increase their visibility in the mobile and web game spaces with some "exciting new technologies" planned for 2011, according to a statement. Steamboat Ventures led the new funding round, which was joined by Greycroft Partners, DFJ Mercury, DFJ Frontier and ff Asset Management. Steamboat's Beau Laskey and DFJ's Blair Garrou will join the company's board of directors. “We believe that GameSalad’s disruptive technology is creating an entirely new set of opportunities for game enthusiasts," Laskey said.
