Online game portal and publisher Kongregate has acquired Synapse Games for an undisclosed fee.

Synapse, which will continue to operate as an independent studio, is the mobile and online game studio behind titles includng Animation Throwdown, Castaway Cove, and Spellstone

The two companies have been working together since 2011, when Synapse released its first ever web game, War Metal Tyrant, through Kongregate's web portal.

Notably, the purchase means Kongregate now has two in-house studios working under its banner, with the firm having previously snapped up Ultrabit in 2015.

Incidentally, its also the first acquisition Kongregate has made since it was purchased by Swedish media group MTG for $55 million.

"Synapse has felt like a member of the Kongregate family for years, starting with their huge presence and strong fan following on Kongregate.com, and more recently with their expansion into mobile and Steam development with us," said Kongregate co-founder and CEO, Emily Greer.

"I'm thrilled to finally make them officially a part of Kongregate. They share our strong commitment to players and our desire to continue to push for innovation within the gaming industry across web, mobile, PC, and new platforms."

The company reiterated that desire very recently by establishing a $10 million publishing fund to expand its PC and console lineup.
