Machine Zone rebrands as MZ, launches new connectivity platform

U.S. mobile powerhouse Machine Zone is launching a new platform to let other companies license out its cloud technology to bolster the connectivity of their own apps and services.

The news came straight from the mouth of company founder and CEO, Gabe Leydon, speaking at the VentureBeat Mobile Summit in Sausalito, California. He also revealed that Machine Zone will be rebranding as MZ. 

According to Leydon, the new cloud platform will let creators do "extremely large things in real time,” and is around 100 times bigger than the platform supporting Game of War, which Leydon says currently hosts over one million players in the same virtual space. 

“RTplatform is massive platform for doing high-fanout data processing,” said Leydon, speaking to VentureBeat. “We hope to do many-to-many applications. This is an infrastructure that allows you to do some extremely large things in real time at scale.

“Our new platform is 100 times bigger than [Game of War's]. It’s a new way of looking at real-time applications. I hope MZ and its legacy is to bring about the many-to-many Internet. The ultimate goal is putting everybody in the same place at once.”

RTplatform is due to become its own division within MZ, and is being pitched by the developer as a more scalable offering than those being served up by Amazon and Google. 

MZ’s rebrand follows the news that Game of War was the mobile title with the highest average spend in the U.S. in 2015, with research outfit Slice finding that the game had an average spend per paying player of $550 last year.
