Nexon snaps up High School Story game dev Pixelberry Studios

Online game company Nexon has made a deal to acquire California-based mobile game studio Pixelberry Games for an undisclosed sum.

This seems like a big deal for Pixelberry, which was started by Electronic Arts vets 5 years ago and has since made a name for itself as a purveyor of narrative-heavy choice-based games like High School Story (pictured) and Choices: Stories You Play.

The former game picked up some attention in the press earlier this year for working with experts to update the game with content that would raise awareness about cyberbullying, and Pixelberry donated a portion of its earnings from the game to cyberbullying charities.

Under the terms of the acquisition, Pixelberry will continue to operate its games and refresh them with new narrative updates. In addition, Nexon will work with Pixelberry to help it localize Choices for the mobile markets in Asia.

Coincidentally, Nexon made a cameo in another bit of (completely unrelated) buyout news today: Electronic Arts' deal to acquire Titanfall developer Respawn Entertainment for as much as $455 million. That deal was reportedly sparked by Nexon's formal bid to acquire Respawn, which has been working with Nexon to publish the F2P mobile game Titanfall Assault. Respawn was reportedly obliged to give EA the opportunity to outbid, which it evidently did.
