VR-curious mobile developers, take note: Oculus VR just released a version of its Oculus Mobile SDK to the public with documentation and a smattering of demos in an effort to broaden developer support for the platform. This version of the SDK is targeted at Samsung's upcoming Gear VR headset, which effectively functions as a standalone VR headset when you slot one of Samsung's Galaxy Note 4 smartphones into it. Samsung is expected to launch a dev kit-like "Innovator Edition" version of the Gear VR next month, making it one of the first publicly-available mobile VR headsets. Oculus' road to releasing this software has been far from easy. During an interview with Gamasutra earlier this year, Oculus CTO John Carmack spoke frankly about the sizable challenges he faced while working within Android to build tools for VR developers. If you're still interested, make sure to check out our conversation with Gear VR developers Barry Meade (The Room) and E McNeill (Darknet) for advice on what to expect when developing mobile VR games.
