The changing face of Steam games

Steam Spy creator Sergey Galyonkin has mined the Steam platform's data and looks at which user-generated tags (so game subject matter or genres) have grown and shrunk in recent years.

Steam sales tracking service Steam Spy creator Sergey Galyonkin has mined the platform's data and produced an interesting result yet again: This time, he's taking a look at which user-generated tags (which typically cover game subject matter or genre) have grown and shrunk in recent years as a proportion of the total number of games on the platform.

While it's hard to draw any major conclusions from the data -- his only significant takeaway is that the content on the platform has changed a lot in the last few years -- but it does let you get a snapshot of what kinds of games players like to buy; it might help you guess which kinds of games there may be too many or too few of.
