Being a game development studio we use more hardware in a year than a family will in five lifetimes.  So we get to see the good, bad and the ugly.  We rarely write about our experiences since it is usually mundane and par for the course. We DO write when we come across something like this Toshiba laptop.

We try to get as many commonly used computers as possible for our test lab as possible.  This way we can insure that our products run when we release them.  The Toshiba Satellite series is one of the most sold brands and models in the world, so naturally we bought one.  I don’t think it has been quite a year and it started acting up –

  1. Freezing up on sleep

  2. Freezing up half way on boot

  3. Not booting at all, just sitting there after the CMOS screen

  4. Having to have the power forcibly cut off by unplugging and removing the battery.

  5. Now only runs on battery, freezes if plugged in.

So we contacted Toshiba support about all this months ago.  We are still waiting for a response.  We logged into Toshiba’s support forums only to find hundreds if not thousands of people bitching about the same thing. People described the same problems with various models of Toshiba laptops, but no response from Toshiba at all.  We did a Google search for “Toshiba satellite freezes” and get 2.9 million sites.  Nice huh?  So this is the first and the last Toshiba we will own.  Since many people ask us for advice on what to buy, you know we won’t recommend Toshiba anything now.  Thanks for the support Toshiba.  Look for an upcoming video in the future titled “Mossberg talks to Toshiba Laptop”
