A leveling system has now been added to the Lego Universe MMO, as a means of giving players "a sense of achievement." Experience points are earned via completing missions and achievements, and players are able to level their characters up to a maximum of level 40. A number of extra features are also included, such as new faction kits based on the Specialized Adventurer, Shinobi, Space Ranger and Inventor ranges. Jordan Itkowitz, design director for Lego Universe, explained, "We love to challenge our Lego Universe builders. We’re regularly adding new content and new bricks for players to continuously evolve and tap into their innermost creativity." "With the addition of the leveling system, we’re looking to inspire players to explore deeper into the universe, and tackle more difficult goals than they may have considered before." A limited free-to-play version, first announced in June, is now also available to download. Lego took over the development of Lego Universe in February, absorbing much of the original NetDevil team that first launched the game last October.
