SpeedTree has announced a new version of its popular environmental modeling SDK now includes support for projects meant for Mac and DirectX 11, as well as the upcoming PlayStation Vita. Version 6 of SpeedTree for Games also includes level-of-detail improvements for the shader that claim to improve rendering speed by 40 percent or more, as well as new systems for simulating grass, undergrowth and wind. The SpeedTree Modeler has also been updated with a streamlined, drag-and-drop workflow interface that can automatically blend branch intersections, handle branch collision, optimize details on leaves and more. The new update comes over two years after the release of SpeedTree 5.0, the company's last full-numbered update, and over a year after the most recent version 5.2. SpeedTree has been used in titles ranging from Microsoft's Project Gotham Racing and Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion to Section 8: Prejudice and America's Army 3.
