BioWare's Mass Effect 2 has shipped 2 million units, says publisher Electronic Arts, which claims the "first blockbuster of 2010" in its announcement today. "Mass Effect 2 is poised to be one of the biggest games of 2010," says BioWare co-founder and general manager Ray Muzyka. "We could not be more proud of the game’s universal acclaim and early commercial success." The game averages a 96 review score on Metacritic, one of the highest on next-gen consoles, tying it with with games like Take-Two's BioShock, Valve's The Orange Box and Sony's Uncharted 2. Lead producer Adrien Cho recently explained to Gamasutra how BioWare incorporated as much feedback from the first game as possible into the sequel to make it more successful. "We wanted to make sure that absolutely every issue that was brought up was addressed... so the press had nowhere to go, and all the critics had nowhere to go, because we had made an attempt to hopefully address all those issues in some capacity," he told us. The title released in North America just three days ago on January 26, and Gamasutra's Chris Remo recently analyzed the changes made to the gameplay system, finding it something of an experiment in codifying genre.
