Beleaguered publisher and developer Midway announced that Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe shipped some 1.8 million units worldwide for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 since releasing on November 2008. As its title suggests, the 3D fighting game features characters from the Mortal Kombat series, as well as DC Comics superheroes and villains (Batman, Lex Luthor, etc.), incorporating the violent franchise's signature Fatalities and Heroic Brutalities. Midway adds that the game was its most pre-ordered title for the Mortal Kombat series so far, and that PlayStation 3 owners around the world have played over 3.6 million matches online. Despite Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe's highlights, Midway has spent the past couple months fighting off bankruptcy and stock market delisting. Midway recently reduced its staff by a further 25 percent after layoffs throughout the year, closed its Austin studio, and terminated several projects. The Chicago-based company's troubles not only stem from current economic conditions, but from media mogul Sumner Redstone's sale of his controlling stake in the company in December. "Mortal Kombat vs. DC Universe was the result of countless hours of hard work by many people, and seeing the game surpass the million-seller plateau makes it worth all the effort," says Ed Boon, Mortal Kombat co-creator and Midway's creative director. "We’re already hard at work on our next version of Mortal Kombat, and look forward to being able to reveal more details in the future."
