Resident Evil Series Life-To-Date Sales Hit 40 Million

Capcom may lay claim to revered properties like Street Fighter and Mega Man, but it's the Resident Evil franchise that tops all others in the company's portfolio with 40 million sold.

Capcom may lay claim to revered properties like Street Fighter and Mega Man, but it's the Resident Evil franchise that tops all others in the company's portfolio. Since the original Resident Evil launched in 1996, the series has sold about 40 million units globally across 56 SKUs, Capcom said this week. The latest in the series, March's Resident Evil 5, has sold 4.4 million units to date. The franchise sales of Resident Evil easily top those of other highly successful franchises. The 20-year-old Street Fighter franchise has sold 27 million units across 62 SKUs, while Mega Man has sold 28 million across a whopping 124 SKUs. The next best-selling franchise is Devil May Cry, which debuted during the previous console generation and has seen one iteration on current consoles and PC. Below are the top franchises in Capcom's home video game portfolio, according to the company's investor relations website (unit sales, number of SKUs): Resident Evil: 40 million, 56 Mega Man: 28 million, 124 Street Fighter: 27 million, 62 Devil May Cry: 10 million, 11 Monster Hunter: 8.5 million Onimusha: 7.8 million, 12 Dino Crisis: 4.4 million, 13 Ghosts 'n' Goblins: 4.4 million, 16 Ace Attorney: 3.2 million, 12 Final Fight: 3.2 million, 10 Breath of Fire: 3 million, 15 1942: 1.2 million, 3 Commando: 1.2 million, 2 Sengoku Basara (Devil Kings): 1.2 million, 10 Capcom also released its latest list of million-sellers by title. The company logged 44 in total, with 10 of those appearing on the current generation of consoles and handhelds. Here are the top 20 (in millions, top 44 available here): 1.
