Ahead of publisher Electronic Arts’ E3 press conference today, developer BioWare has revealed gameplay details for Dragon Age: Origins, which the company plans to focus on exhibiting at this year’s E3 E3 Media and Business Summit. According to BioWare, Dragon Age: Origins represents the studio’s return to its fantasy-themed and emotionally-driven narrative roots, a spiritual successor to Baldur’s Gate. Due for PCs in early 2009, the game is said to play up its dark and mature story and gameplay. Several Dragon Age: Origins features BioWare plans to cover in private E3 demonstrations include the scalable combat system, which allows players to take their groups into large-scale battles, and spell combos, which are a way of combining different spells to create unique effects. With Origin Stories, players select and play a unique prelude that provides the lens through which the player sees the world and how the world sees the player. The choice of Origin will determine who the players are and where they begin the adventure. They will also be able to affect the story and the world through their actions in the game and the alliances they form. Said Electronic Arts vice president and BioWare co-general manager and CEO Ray Muzyka: "We're thrilled to be returning to BioWare's fantasy roots, with Dragon Age: Origins representing the culmination of over a decade of experience. Dragon Age: Origins is a dark heroic fantasy that doesn't pull any punches. Our fans are in for the most emotionally intense gaming experience we've ever created, and we hope to surprise them with just how dark and gritty it gets!"
