Blockbuster stores announced its new game offering today: a service that lets members rent unlimited games (although, only one game per visit) for three months for $49. Each time Blockbuster “Flip Card” customers rent a game from the video rental chain store, they may keep it for an unlimited time, until they wish to rent a new one, unlike a similar movie rental program that lets viewers take home multiple titles at a time. The Flip Card promotion comes not long after Netflix, an online DVD rental company, talked about the possibility of adding games to its repertoire, a model that Gamefly, Red Octane, and G-Play have already implemented. Similarly, cable provider Comcast recently announced Games on Demand, an online pay-to-play game service. The program’s cost reflects a price point that aims to be just under the cost of a single major store-bought game, and Blockbuster will stop taking new memberships in early September, prompting customers to join during the summer vacation period for schools.
