Criterion Software announced an alliance with Sony Computer Entertainment (SCEI) to provide its 3D graphics library Renderware as a middleware component for the next generation Playstation. Middleware is a key part of Sony's strategy to make the next generation Playstation a great development platform, and Renderware is a key component of their middleware program. Sony believes middleware helps to reduce game development time and gets the best out of the platform by taking care of common functionality and easing the development of custom effects. Over the past two years, Criterion has been developing Renderware plug-ins that provide specific functionality to assist game developers in the real-time management and synthesis of the vast amount of graphics data required to drive the next generation Playstation to the limit
