Representatives from Wake Tech Community College in North Carolina have announced what they describe as the Triangle’s versions of the recent E3 expo held in Los Angeles, and the only digital game expo held on the South East coast of the U.S. The so-called “Research Triangle” area in the Piedmont of North Carolina includes the major research universities of North Carolina State University, Duke University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. North Carolina as a whole has more than thirty companies in the game development industry, including Epic Games, Red Storm, Funcom, Virtual Heroes and Vicious Cycle. Unlike many other states, North Carolina appears sympathetic towards the games industry, with recent plans considered for offering tax breaks for local developers. The Digital Game Expo event will include keynote speeches from Jerry Heneghan, CEO of America’s Army platform developer Virtual Heroes and Jason Della Rocca, executive director of the International Game Development Association (IGDA). The expo will also include a number of other seminars and workshops, as well as promotions for Wake Tech’s new simulation and game development associate degree program. The expo will also be open to the general public, does not require registration and is open to all ages. The cost of the two-day conference is $85 ($42.50 for college students with ID), which covers four one-hour classes, lunch, one keynote lecture each day and a dgexpo T-shirt. The event will take place on Friday and Saturday, June 23rd and 24th, with further information available via the official website.
