Discreet has announced a new partnership with Criterion Software to develop a JSR-184/M3G export plug-in for 3ds Max. This represents the first serious commitment by Discreet to support the development of 3D content for mobile phones, although its parent company Autodesk has been involved in other aspects of the mobile phone industry--location-based services in particular--for several years. The conversion will be developed by Digital Elements (a partner of Discreet), and will include both the exporter and a desktop previewer, so that developers won't have to download the results to a portable device just to see the result. No details about the price or ship date of the planned converter were announced.
