Nintendo’s domination of the Japanese sales charts has continued this week, with four first party Nintendo DS titles in the top five, and six overall in the top ten. The second game in the core Brain Training series has remained at number one for the second consecutive week, with the first Brain Training game – recently released in America as Brain Age – moving up to number two after, almost a year since its original release. Despite such achievements, though, this week has seen some of the lowest overall sales in Japan so far this year, as is normally the case in the build up towards the Golden Week holidays. The number one title sold only 70,984 units, while the highest new entry at number four (the latest in the Densetsu no Stafi series, which remains the only prominent Nintendo platform franchise not to be released in the West) recorded a relatively modest 47,971 sales. Hardware sales mirror those of software, in both their domination by Nintendo and their notable dip from previous weeks. 178,173 units of Nintendo DS were sold (140,969 of the DS Lite and 37,204 of the original model), with the PlayStation 2 moving up to second place with 27,549 units sold. PSP sells fell to 26,340, with the Game Boy Advance family of consoles at 10,094 units sold. But the Xbox 360 avoided last place for the third week running, with 1,926 units sold, compared to 1,080 for the GameCube.
