Riot Games' multiplayer PC title League of Legends has been downloaded over one million times after just three months on the market, the company announced today. The free-to-play action/RPG hybrid, heavily inspired by the mega-hit WarCraft III mod Defense of the Ancients, launched late in October 2009. Paid customizations are optional, and Riot is now tasked with continuing to support its online community. League of Legends' players have collectively spent more than 18 million hours in the game, and over 150,000 gamers in North America and Europe compete daily, Riot says. "The passion of our more than 1 million-member League of Legends community and their positive support has driven the recognition from media and the video game industry," says Riot games co-founder Brandon Beck, citing awards from PC Gamer magazine and consumer websites like IGN and Gamespy. "We are pleased that our debut title is growing so quickly and receiving this type of praise from the video games community," adds co-founder and president Marc Merrill, co-founder and president of Riot Games.
