Today's Gamasutra news round-up includes news of an upcoming arcade conversion of Ubisoft's first-person shooter Far Cry, Counter-Strike co-developers Turtle Rock Studios' new Source engine-based project, and Konami's big 25th anniversary celebration for Frogger, as well as the latest GameSetWatch updates, product news and Gamasutra job postings. - Global VR, a developer of arcade machines, has announced a new title for conversion to arcade play: Ubisoft's Far Cry Instincts, the console entry in the Far Cry series. "This coin-op version provides players the opportunity to engage in totally immersive game-play not possible in the home version, plus it has a brand new storyline," said game producer Jeff Shotwell. “The game platform will include high definition monitor on deluxe systems and surround sound so realistic players will feel like they are right in the middle of the action. This is going to be fun!” Global VR also recently signed a deal with EA Sports to develop an arcade edition of NASCAR. - Turtle Rock Studios, co-developers of the Counter-Strike series with Valve Software, has announced a new game to be developed using Valve's Source engine and distributed over Valve's Steam digital delivery service. No details on the PC game were released, though the composition of Turtle Rock's team indicates that it could be a real-time strategy game, as its staffers have previously worked on Command & Conquer titles as well as Nox. "Working with Source and Steam allows us unprecedented flexibility in our development process, provides instantaneous world-wide distribution, and affords us the creative freedom to focus on building a game universe of our very own." said Turtle Rock founder Michael Booth. "We're excited to be working with this technology and to reveal more about the project over the coming year." - Konami has begun a promotional campaign for the 25th anniversary of its Frogger franchise, centering around a new website. The silver anniversary celebration will include appearances by Frogger at the New York St. Patrick's Day parade, as well as the Game Developers Conference, CTIA Wireless, E3, and the San Diego Comic Convention. "One of the original video game icons, Frogger remains just as popular today as when he first tried to cross that busy street 25 years ago," said Konami senior VP of sales and marketing Catherine Fowler. "We are celebrating Frogger’s silver anniversary with a variety of new products and programs that will ensure that he remains an enduring figure to an all-new generation of gamers as well as the millions of existing fans of the franchise." - Recent updates on Gamasutra sister weblog GameSetWatch include a new GlobalVR arcade game based on the Alien franchise, an upcoming console game designed by a 17-year-old goth girl, a media scanning project for text adventure fans, and the latest installment in our new "Bastards of 32-Bit" column, featuring Mr. Bones for the Sega Saturn. - Also updated today: product news, featuring Gamecaster's Cybercam S2 and Quazal's Net-Z and Rendez-Vous, along with the latest Gamasutra job postings, featuring openings from Irrational Games, LucasArts, Ubisoft Shanghai Studio, Radical Entertainment, Motorola, Blockdot, and KingsIsle Entertainment.
