In separate announcements, Sega, Capcom, Grin and others said that they are licensing Nvidia’s PhysX and APEX tools for forthcoming games. The Sega deal applies to all of the company’s internal studios, although no specific titles have been mentioned as yet. The Capcom deal is specifically for Dark Void, developed by U.S. team Airtight Games. Swedish developer Grin, who are also working with Capcom on the forthcoming Bionic Commando, have licensed the same technology for movie tie-in Terminator: Salvation. Also licensing the PhysX technology is U.S. developer 8monkey Labs for first person shooter Darkest of Days and Russian team Biart Studio for new title U-WARS. The PhysX middleware technology is already widely used, allowing for simulated physics systems to be augmented either by a system’s main processor or a CUDA-enabled Nvidia graphics processor. Nvidia aims its APEX technology toward artists, enabling them to create realistic environments and interactions. “Sega has been using PhysX technology for several years, but this new agreement enables our studios to take advantage of the full portfolio of cross-platform PhysX engines," said Takashi Shoji, a department manager at Sega’s Consumer R&D division.
