Sony has confirmed earlier reports that the bite-size PSP Minis games will be playable on PlayStation 3 with the next firmware upgrade. The European PlayStation blog says that firmware upgrade 3.15 will allow the Minis emulator to work on PS3 so that players can access titles like Blast Off, Fieldrunners and Kahoots directly on the console. Beginning December 17, all forthcoming Minis will be compatible with both platforms. Users who want to play Minis they've already bought on their PS3 can re-download them for free. When the company announced the Minis program, it said it planned a total of 50 titles for 2009. There are currently just over 20 U.S. PSP Minis available, as of early December. The PSP Go had a fairly soft launch at the beginning of October, and has maintained a relatively low profile since then. Sony has spoken little of how either the Minis or the new digital handheld are performing, preferring to group it with the earlier PSP as an aggregate category. The firmware update will also add a data transfer feature for PS3, whereby users can move their saved data from one PS3 to another. The feature is likely aimed at many current PS3 owners who want switch their older model for a new Slim model.
