Can the PSP capitalize a bit on the broad consumer appetite for do-everything mobile devices, particularly with the upcoming PSP Go? Perhaps if the apps are there -- and Sony says it hopes to make that possible. "The goal... is to enable all sorts of developers to be able to develop content for the PSP," SCEA rep Al De Leon commented in a video interview with CNet.com, as referenced by game blog VG247. Sony's strategy of overgeneralizing its gaming platform with the initial marketing of the PlayStation 3 has backfired on it somewhat, and it's since returned to a much more strictly game-oriented focus for the platform. Similarly, the company stops well short of overtly positioning the PSP Go against all-purpose mobile hardware like the iPhone, but the company's lower-priced PSP dev kit appears to be encouraging developers of any kind to get involved with the platform. "It’ll mostly be games," stresses de Leon, "but there’s certainly an opportunity to develop non-gaming applications." De Leon didn't provide any further details on what sort of apps might best lend themselves to the PSP Go!, but widespread consumer media reports have suggested that the company may be ready to show "non-retail" apps for the hardware later this summer.
