Japanese Xbox owners, promised a mass multiplayer role playing game for their console, are stuck in the dark. True Fantasy Live Online has been canned. Microsoft Corp. and Japanese developer Level 5 Inc. have been promoting the first MMORPG for Xbox since March 2002, but have scrapped the project due to a longer-than-expected development period and the companies’ inability to create an innovative game experience. The game’s release was scheduled for year’s end, but had been postponed twice already. The first MMORPG for a console was released in Japan for PlayStation 2 in May 2002: Final Fantasy XI by Square Enix. Microsoft has not announced any plans to develop a new MMORPG for Xbox.
