As it releases an update to its Unity Engine development platform, engine maker Unity Technologies says it's experienced 100 percent growth in its sales, staff and community activity. The engine, which supports PC, Mac, iPhone and Wii, is primarily employed in web-based online games. "We seem to have struck a chord with the community, professional developers and new companies looking at ways to engage with their audience through web based games," says CEO David Helgason. "There’s been a fundamental shift towards web based games and MMO’s which has now reached a tipping point in the West," adds Helgason. "There’s no turning the clock back.' The company says it has seen 100 percent more Unity license sales in the past six months, has doubled its staff and says it's continuing to hire. Some notable web and non-web based titles using Unity include the Cartoon Network MMO FusionFall, as well as Zombieville, USA on iPhone and the web browser-based Off-Road Velociraptor Safari. The latest update to Unity, 2.5.1, enables Windows Vista, XP and 2000 development and promises 100 percent feature parity and interoperability with Mac OS X for cross-platform development. It also adds new features like a streamlined 3DS Max importer and interface updated for usability.
