Sony has confirmed the next installment in the company's long running WipEout futuristic racing series by announcing WipEout Pulse, expected for a UK release this September on the PSP. Once again in development by SCEE’s Studio Liverpool, the studio that founded the franchise on the PlayStation in 1995, and most recently behind the acclaimed PSP launch title WipEout Pure, WipEout Pulse will offer 24 new tracks, new weapons, 8 different racing teams, and 7 different game modes. Also included will be a new training mode, no doubt a welcome addition for many given the series' traditionally steep learning curve, as well as a new track feature called Mag-Strip, which acts like a magnet and binds ships to the track, making possible such things as loops, vertical drops and 90 degrees angled sections. The game's soundtrack will include a variety of licensed music from bands such as Mason, Loco Dice and Stanton Warriors, and will support the ability to play custom mp3 music files from the PSP's memory stick. Finally, Sony has confirmed that the upcoming racer will include both local and internet wireless multiplayer capabilities, and that the developers plan to support the game post launch with fresh downloadable content such as new tracks, ships, and music, continuing the tradition it set with Pure.
