FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

2001: A Space Odyssey meets Civilization meets David Attenborough”

New York, NY, December 18, 2023—Computer Lunch, a leading developer of “play knowledge” games, today announced the launch of “Beyond E21: Echoes of Earth,” the newest episode of the popular and award-winning Cell to Singularity, a game that has been described as “2001: A Space Odyssey meets Civilization meets David Attenborough” for its combination of lush visualizations, immersive world-building and incorporation of the latest scientific findings about the universe.

A Second Home Planet…?

“Beyond E21: Echoes of Earth” arrives at a time when ChatGPT has raised questions about sentient A.I. and the latest scientific research suggests that there are potentially 300 million habitable planets in the galaxy (source: CNN).

E21 thrusts players in the path of the most remote exoplanets, in the attempt to find an alternative to Earth as global warming worsens and natural resources dwindle. As in previous episodes, all gameplay takes place inside a simulation created by Semblance, an officious, HAL-like artificial intelligence, which has turned to players to help it replicate the perfect model of life.

Arriving on the 50th anniversary of Pioneer 10, which on December 4, 1973 (source: NASA) sent back the first images of Jupiter of ever-increasing size and opened the gateway to deep space, “Echoes of Earth” sets a new benchmark for the genre of scientifically accurate but engaging gameplay that Cell to Singularity pioneered.

Astronomy as “Playable Science”

In place of the clichés of Triple-A titles and Hollywood tropes, E21 combines the most current data from Webb, Kepler, and other sources (some of it less than six months old), with 3-D positioning coordinates from NASA, WASP (Wide Angle Search for Planets) and other consortia—a rigorous attention to detail which has its fanbase in 18 languages eagerly awaiting the latest episode.

“The players keep surprising us,” said Andrew Garrahan, Co-Founder, Computer Lunch. “Every episode, as life in the universe has grown more varied and complex, the number of players has increased and become even more committed to the mission of the game. With ‘Echoes of Earth,’ that interest has increased exponentially. Players are excited to experience the wonders of exoplanets like Enaiposha, whose atmosphere is believed to be composed of water vapor.”

“As writers, artists, scientists and game-makers, we have sought the broadest possible audience with an underserved area of interactive entertainment,” added Kati Nawrocki, co-founder, Computer Lunch. “We have also sought to make our games out of the primary element of 21st-century life: data. If we are in any way successful, it is due to the talents of our team and the feedback and commitment of our community, which has been a vital element since the multicellular early days of this game.”
