LOS ANGELES – The 5th of April 2011– Riot Games, the award-winning online game developer and publisher, today announced that League of Legends players have raised over $160.000 for victims of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan. From March 21 to March 27, Riot committed 100% of proceeds from the champion Akali and the Nurse Akali skin to the American Red Cross, and over 50.000 members of the League of Legends community came together to contribute to the relief effort. Donations benefited the Japan Earthquake and Pacific Tsunami fund.
“We are nothing short of astonished by the incredible generosity of the League of Legends community,” said Marc Merrill, President of Riot Games. “The earthquake and tsunami in Japan was a tragedy of overwhelming proportion, and we can’t thank our players enough for stepping up and contributing to the relief efforts.”
League of Legends, Riot Games’ debut title, celebrated its first anniversary on Oct. 27, 2010. Since its launch in North America and Europe, millions of players have downloaded the game to engage in session-based, multiplayer battles against rival teams. Built by a veteran development team, including original creators of the popular, player-made mod Defense of the Ancients, League of Legends combines elements of both strategy and competitive action genres.
