London, UK - 21 October, 2004 - Macrospace, the global provider of mobile games and mobile gaming services, today announced the launch of a suite of innovative multiplayer mobile games. These new games allow players to compete in real-time using their mobile phones with not only other mobile users, but also PC users via their web browser, creating a whole new multiplayer dynamic.

These new games have been designed to target more casual gamers, through the emphasis on building community and social interaction within the game itself. By creating games that appeal to as broad a demographic as possible Macrospace hopes to attract people who are familiar with web-based games, but who may not realise that their mobile phone is also capable of playing fun, engrossing games. These new games use powerful server-side technologies to create a robust multiplayer platform that is super-simple for even novice gamers to use.

The first three multiplayer games being launched are:

  • Multiplayer Four-in-a-row - You can play this classic multiplayer game anytime, anywhere. Get four counters in a row before your opponent - it takes skill, strategy, and a little luck!

  • Multiplayer Reversi - Challenge your friends anytime, anywhere in the multiplayer version of this timeless game of strategy. Try to cover the board with your pieces to become the winner - it's harder than it looks!

  • Multiplayer Battle Ocean - Play against your friends in this amazing multiplayer version of the famous board game! Sink your opponents' fleet of ships before he sinks yours - it's tense, challenging mobile fun!

These new games have been developed in partnership with Denmark's Certus, which has many years of experience in server-based multiplayer gaming on the web with it's SYMFONI technology. Using the mobile versions of these games developed by Certus, Macrospace has added it's considerable expertise to integrate its own ConnectX mobile multiplayer technology, creating a suite of games which can be played across any Java-enabled mobile or web platform. All the games have been specifically designed to work across 2G, 2.5G and 3G technology, using turn-based gameplay that suits the technical limitations of existing handsets and networks.

All these games utilise global ranking and high scores, allowing users view other players' scores and select opponents of a similar skill level. Players can also chat to each other between both mobile and web seamlessly. Certus' technology allows operators and portals to run tournaments and create competition leagues, and users can be updated with news, new features and information about other multiplayer games from within the game. Also, all the new Macrospace multiplayer games let users create a single persistent username, meaning that there is no need to create a new username and password for every multiplayer Macrospace game they purchase.

"Launching these titles is a step towards realising the huge potential of multiplayer mobile games," said Kristian Segerstråle, Head of products and services at Macrospace. "The mobile industry is quickly learning the lessons of the online gaming space, where millions of people every day play against friends and family. Cross-platform multiplayer games have the ability to combine the ease and simplicity of online games with the play-anywhere convenience of mobile devices. By adding the ability to play via the web we hope that many people who have never tried mobile games before will see just how exciting and easy it can be."

"In the online world casual players often choose a game because of the sense of community it brings, rather than any particular gameplay features; there's no reason why the mobile world should be any different," said Morten Kolle Christensen, Head of Certus. "These new multiplayer games are driven by social interaction, status, competition and prizes. In other words, they are all about creating a thriving community. With the addition of this new mobile layer we can now offer a fun, involving gaming experience, whatever the platform."
