Berlin, Germany – March 19th 2024 – Indie game studio Paintbucket Games is excited to announce the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for its latest project, "The Darkest Files", on March 19th at 4pm (GMT+1). This historical true crime investigation game is set in the evocative Noir era of post-World War II and is the spiritual successor to the award-winning "Through the Darkest of Times".

"The Darkest Files" won the "Most Promising Game" and "Most Anticipated Game" Awards at Indie Cup Germany 2023.

"The Darkest Files" invites players to embark on a gripping journey through a narrative that could potentially rewrite history. Inspired by the real-life efforts of Frankfurt Attorney General Fritz Bauer and set before the initiation of the Auschwitz trials, the game is poised at a crucial moment in history. Players will take on the role of young prosecutor Esther Katz who is determined to ensure that the dark past does not shape the future. "Nothing belongs to the past, everything is still present and can become the future again," said Fritz Bauer, encapsulating the spirit that drives "The Darkest Files".

Founded in 2018 by industry veterans Jörg Friedrich and Sebastian St. Schulz, Paintbucket Games has established itself as a studio that dares to delve into historically and politically charged themes. With a diverse team of around 15 developers working out of their Berlin studio, Paintbucket's dedication to humanitarian values and opposition to hate and discrimination shines through in their work. The studio's first game, "Through the Darkest of Times", received worldwide acclaim, earning several awards and a nomination for "Games for Impact" at The Game Awards.

The Kickstarter campaign is not just a means to secure additional funding for the game's next development phase, leading to a Closed Beta. It also represents a unique opportunity for fans to become more intimately involved in the creation process of "The Darkest Files". By participating in the campaign, backers will have the chance to contribute to the game's balancing and influence creative decisions, ensuring it is in the best possible shape for its final release.

"We believe in creating games that not only entertain but also educate and provoke thought," said Jörg Friedrich. "With 'The Darkest Files', we aim to offer an immersive experience that respects history while engaging players in a narrative that feels as urgent and relevant today as ever. The Kickstarter campaign is a call to our community to join us in this ambitious endeavor, building on the legacy of 'Through the Darkest of Times'."
