Slitherine Software :

Slitherine Software has offered up another helping of its mouthwatering cooking show, The Geek Recipe, which is produced by gamers for gamers. Available now on Slitherine’s YouTube channel, episode five of Season 2 sees Spiders CEO and co-founder Jehanne Rousseau detail her extensive career in the video games industry. Her remarkable journey spans from developing sprite-based Game Boy games in the 1990s, to heading up one of the most exciting RPG studios of the modern era.

In the episode, Rousseau joins Slitherine’s very own master chef (and Chief Marketing Officer) Marco Minoli to prepare some delicious passatelli asciutti. Here Rousseau discusses the risk factors associated with creating new IPs, the interactive process of modern game development, and the pressures and expectations the studio faced when crafting the much-anticipated GreedFall 2: The Dying World.

Founded in 2008, Spiders is a French development studio which specialises in creating original and innovative action RPGs. The studio has gained prominence, particularly in the last decade, through releases such as The Technomancer, GreedFall, and Steelrising

“As soon as you are creating something new, you’re taking a risk, and not all of your games will be successful, but that’s part of the process. I think that what’s important for me when creating a world and stories is to make sure that there are still some elements that will be reassuring for the players.” - Jehanne Rousseau, Spiders.

With the process of game development continuing to evolve and becoming a more interactive process, Rousseau was asked what now sets the boundaries between a creator and the players. She said: “Before it was difficult as you were releasing the game and there were no patches because it was just packed and that’s it. Now we can exchange with the community even early into development and we can ask them what they would like. So yeah, they are now really part of the process of creation.”

The Geek Recipe reaffirms that the way to a gamer’s heart is through the stomach, regardless of background or skill level. Each new episode invites a renowned game developer, writer, creator, or director to Slitherine’s kitchen, where the celebrity guests share the secret ingredients of not only what makes great food, but also great entertainment.

Industry veteran and Heroes of Might and Magic III creator David Mullich kicked off the Geek Recipe’s Season 2 with a special Eggplant Adventure, followed by Episode 2 with Focus Entertainment’s Chief Creative Officer Dessil Basmadjian. In the last episode, Revolution Software co-founder Charles Cecil stepped into the role of sous chef, helping to prepare delicious gnocchi alla sorrentina. Here Cecil discussed the inspirations behind the studio’s next major project, Broken Sword - Parzival's Stone, the use of AI which is being employed in the upcoming remaster of the first Broken Sword, and his thoughts on whether the point-and-click genre is still relevant in 2024.

The Geek Recipe’s previous Season 1 saw three celebrated game industry celebrities get busy in Slitherine’s kitchen. From the Creative Director of WolfEye Studios and founder of Arkane Studios Raphael Colantonio to Ubisoft Milan’s Creative Director Davide Soliani (Mario + Rabbids series) and Frederik Schreiber, CEO of 3DREALMS, all had juicy tales to tell about their time and extensive experience in the games industry. On the thrid episode of The Geek Recipe Season 02, acclaimed Hollywood director Martin Wood cooked up a storm in the Slitherine kitchen. Wood helped to prepare two delicious vegetarian crepe recipes and lifted the lid on topics such as his introduction to the TV and film industry and his unexpected transition from sci-fi to romantic comedies.
