Bandai Namco Filmworks, Atlas V, Meta Quest and Astrea celebrate the announcement that Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom will make its world Premiere at the 81th Venice International Film Festival as part of its immersive competition.

Co-produced by Japan’s entertainment powerhouse Bandai Namco Filmworks, acclaimed immersive studio Atlas V and distributed by Astrea, Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom is a Virtual Reality (VR) movie set in the beloved mecha world of Gundam, which celebrates its 45th anniversary in 2024.

Gundam, an animated science fiction work centered around fictional robots, has captivated both Japanese and international audiences, spanning generations and touching millions. The various series, based on the original Mobile Suit Gundam, form a chronological tapestry known as the 'Universal Century.' Each installment is historically linked to its predecessors, deepening the story with every episode. These qualities have earned the Universal Century universe enduring popularity and admiration across multiple generations of fans.

The background of the VR film is setted at Universal Century 0096. Three years after the last conflict between Neo Zeon and the Earth Federation, an independent mercenary organization is hired by the Earth Federation to track down a former Commander who joined Neo Zeon remnants "Sleeves". An all-new and epic adventure into the heart of one of Japan's most iconic anime universes.

“We would like to express our sincere gratitude for nominating us as a competition work at Venice Immersive,” said director Kenichi Suzuki. "Gundam is deeply rooted in Japanese culture. With the collaboration of AtlasV and Albyon, we are proud of this VR movie, 'GUNDAM: Silver Phantom,' which allows anyone to experience the 'worldview,' 'characters,' and 'story' in the Universal Century. I hope everyone will watch, feel the VR experience, and share in the excitement. I believe VR films will become a new format in the future."

The 81st Venice International Film Festival, organized by La Biennale di Venezia, will be held from August 28 to September 7, 2024. Venice Immersive, hosted on Lazzaretto Vecchio Island, will feature up to 30 immersive projects premiering globally or internationally. An international jury will award prizes, with Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom competing for the Immersive Grand Prize alongside other immersive works, highlighting Venice's pioneering role in VR since 2016.

CREATOR’S QUOTE

Kenichi Suzuki, Director’s words

We would like to express our sincere gratitude for nominating us to the Immersive section of the Venice International Film Festival. I am thrilled to have participated in the challenging VR film project, "Mobile Suit Gundam: Silver Phantom."

As a 2D animation director, this project was stimulating and required exploring new methods. Many of us at BNF, including myself, were new to VR, making the production process difficult. With support from Atlas V and Albyon, we tackled numerous challenges and created an innovative film.

Gundam is deeply rooted in Japanese culture. This VR film allows everyone to experience the Universal Century. I hope viewers will enjoy and share in the excitement. I believe VR films will establish themselves as a new format in the future.

Finally, I would like to thank you for nominating us along with our staff. Thank you very much.
