Opinion: How will Project 2025 impact game developers?
The Heritage Foundation's manifesto for the possible next administration could do great harm to many, including large portions of the game development community.
Moving off Java development and on to Unity, I'm finding everything pretty engaging so far. Of course I've yet to actually produce anything myself.
I've spent the last 48 hours going through 90% of a pretty in depth tutorial for Unity. I'm really enjoying what I'm producing so far. I've already had a brush with Unity during the Virtual Reality module for my degree this year. That was pretty unforfulling at the time however due to the poor quality of the resources we had to work with. I ended up resenting the software a little because what I created wasn't up to scratch with what I had envisioned. This time around though, I'm having a lot easier time with it.
I've been using the 3D Platformer Tutorial to get me up to speed with this system. It's unfortunate that it's a little out of date, but it's well written (and free) so I can't really complain. I'm up to the chapter on optimisation. I think it's a good time to stop there and go over the entire project so far and make my own changes. This is going to include fixing sound issues. Adding more sound effects. Tweaking the placement of enemies and pickups and maybe messing around with hit detection and animations in combat if I have the chance. I have done very little (read: none) work with animation before so that might be interesting. I have a feeling it'll be a lot harder than it looks.
My plan so far is to spend the next week bringing myself up to speed with the tools while simultaioniously looking for jobs and moving out of my student house. When that's done, I can start making plans for my own project which I can start from scratch. Right now though, it's gonna be more tutorials and messing around with other people's stuff.
