As part of Gamasutra's latest feature, a survey of producers at developers across the industry has revealed that, more than anything else, the respondents see "leadership" as needing improvement. The survey was carried out by production consultant Keith Fuller, and promoted on "my company website, my personal blog, Twitter, Gamasutra, Facebook and on the IGDA production mailing list," he writes. Producers were asked "Where would you like to see improvement?" The choices were: mentoring/training, pre-production, production, polishing/delivering, communication, work/life balance, innovation, company leadership, and "other". Responses were roughly equivalent across all choices -- except leadership, which beat each of them out 2:1. In the graphic above right, the red section of the pie chart represents "leadership". In a prior question in the survey, "leadership" was not chosen by any respondents as what their organization excels at. Later on in the survey, the respondents were asked to rank how much an improvement in the lacking area will impact the company. Fuller writes, based on his analysis of the responses, that they believe that "fixing what needs fixed will have a 100 percent improved, positive impact on company success." The full feature, Improving Your Studio: What Your Producer Told Me, which has several more questions and deeply analyzes responses, is live now on Gamasutra.
