Online game network provider Exit Games has upgraded its Photon network engine to version 3, adding numerous enhancements and new features with immediate effect. The engine, available for use with the likes of Unity, iOS, Android and HTML5, amongst others, now includes lots of "under the hood" improvements, along with brand new elements for developers to utilize. Photon Engine 3 users can make use of the new Load Balancing Power-Up to scale their games across multiple server nodes, while the Photon Unity Networking feature allows devs to combine Unity Networking with the Photon engine. These features plus others are now available for free to all those Photon users who purchased a license for the engine before April 1, 2011. Christof Wegmann, CTO of Exit Games, explained, "We always strive to make Photon the perfect network engine for both the AAA studios as well as for our huge independent community." "Photon 3 incorporates and condenses all our knowledge from AAA projects and makes it available and accessible to everyone. Now, with Photon 3, everyone can afford to build cross-platform multiplayer games that scale for tens of thousands of concurrent users." Exit Games revealed last month a partnership with Chinese game developer The9, that will see Exit's Photon network engine distributed in China.
