Gamasutra has learned that James Storey, A British artist best known in the game industry for his work at 3D Realms/Apogee Software on games like Duke Nukem 3D and Rise of the Triad, passed away last month at the age of 41.
The news comes courtesy of a heartfelt in memoriam published by his former employer 3D Realms, which employed Storey as its first British developer between 1994-'97. He left thereafter to return home, where he reportedly pursued other passions.
"I'm so saddened. James was easily one of the best artists to work at 3D Realms over the years, just such a natural talent," wrote company founder Scott Miller. "A truly nice person, too. He didn't stay with us more than three years because he was so homesick for England."
Storey's other passions included RC racing (he had an active hand in running the RC culture hub Oople, which also mourns his passing) and photography. He was also an active member of the Amiga demoscene throughout the 1990s.
