THQ and Obsidian Entertainment (Fallout: New Vegas, Alpha Protocol) are collaborating with the creators of the long-running cartoon series South Park to create an RPG based on the show for Xbox 360, PS3, and PC. Matt Stone and Trey Parker -- who serve as directors, executive producers, writers, and voice actors for the Comedy Central animated series -- are handling the script and some of the dialogue, and overseeing South Park: The Game's development through their joint venture with Viacom, South Park Digital Studios. According to consumer magazine Game Informer, the game will ship in the second half of 2012, and will have players taking on the role of the new kid at South Park, who must "make friends and defend the town from a wide range of threats." Obsidian has extensive experience creating RPGs based on other companies' properties; its credits include well-received titles like Fallout: New Vegas, the Neverwinter Nights 2 series, and Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. The developer was founded in 2003 by veterans from Interplay Productions' Black Isle Studios, makers of beloved Western RPGs like Planescape: Torment, Icewind Dale, and Baldur's Gate. Other publishers, such as Acclaim, have licensed the South Park show to produce several games in the past. This isn't the only game based on the franchise in development: Microsoft Studios intends to release South Park: Tenorman's Revenge, developed by Other Ocean Interactive, on Xbox Live Arcade this spring. "Our goal is simple: to put creative talent first," said Danny Bilson, Core Games EVP at publisher THQ. "Matt and Trey are arguably two of the most important comedic talents of their generation. Bringing their vision of South Park to the interactive space is a dream-come-true."
