EVE Online, Dust 514 suffer large-scale DDoS attack

Both EVE Online and Dust 514, CCP's pair of hugely popular MMOs, have been offline for over 24 hours now, as the studio looks to secure its servers following a denial-of-service attack.

Both EVE Online and Dust 514, CCP's pair of hugely popular MMOs, have been offline for over 24 hours now, as the studio looks to secure its servers following a denial-of-service attack. The company's servers were attacked in the early hours of the morning on Sunday, and quickly taken offline by the team. Although the servers for both games were initially reopened, CCP later re-evaluated this decision, and once again took the servers offline. "With the highest sense of precaution we have taken Tranquility and associated websites back down for further investigation and an exhaustive scan of our entire infrastructure," the company said in a statement on Facebook. At the time of writing the servers are still down, although the Twitter account for EVE Online claims that CCP is "close to resolving the issues on Tranquility. We aim to have have our servers live as soon as we possibly can." EVE Online recently celebrated its 10-year anniversary, announcing that the game now has over 500,000 subscribers in total -- a record high in the game's history. Update: The servers for both EVE Online and Dust 514 are now back online, and CCP has provided more information on the attack. "What we can now confirm is that a person was able to utilize a vulnerability in one of the back-end services that support the operation of the Tranquility server," Jon Horodal Jonasson, COO at CCP, explained. "This vulnerability has now been secured and thoroughly tested." He added, "We would like to stress that at no time was customer data compromised or accessible in any way." CCP says that it is looking into ways to compensate EVE and Dust players for the downtime, and that these plans will be announced sometime soon.
