Rockstar today announced Grand Theft Auto Online, a dynamic, persistent online game that will launch shortly after Grand Theft Auto V's September 17 launch. Initially the 16-player co-operative/competitive online mode will share the same gameplay, mechanics and locations as GTA V, but over time Rockstar will expand and evolve the title with new content. GTA Online plays out in a similar fashion to the main title, but allows players to band together during missions, and also experience the game's side-activities as a group. The player community will also be able to create new content for the online mode, says the developer. Races, deathmatches and more can be created using the Content Creator, and shared online. There will also be plenty of items for players to buy to customize their experience, although Rockstar has not yet stated whether these will cost real-money, or whether it will also be done using in-game cash. Grand Theft Auto Online will launch on October 1, and will be free to download for everyone who purchases GTA V. Notably, Rockstar has not specifically mentioned that the game requires GTA V to run, and as such it's unclear as to whether this online version will be available outside of GTA V at some point in the future.
