eSports were created by fans of games. What’s been interesting putting together Grudge Match Sports is that almost every piece of research I found focuses on the growth of eSports, and not on its development. Most game companies seem to be reacting to their success rather than leveraging it. As a media guy, I want all of the things successful game companies have, but I view sports as a media play too. Sports are designed to tell stories, and build audiences. Most eSport competitions I’ve watched are purely about game play, and while game play can be compelling, it does not necessary make an emotional connection with the spectator. Grudge Match Sports will be about connecting the game to the player, and the player and game to the audience, where the audience can participate in the story or stakes.
