Well-known Paris-based mobile game developer Gameloft has announced BackStab, its first timed exclusive for Sony Ericsson's upcoming, PlayStation-branded Xperia Play Android phone. The 3D action adventure title, which takes place on an 18th century Caribbean island, will be available exclusively on the Xperia Play for one month after its second quarter release, Gameloft said. After that period, it's unclear whether the game will simply be available for other Android devices or also other mobile platforms. “We are truly excited to continue our support of Xperia Play with an exclusive release of BackStab, bringing the action adventure experience to a new level,” said Gameloft senior vice president publishing Gonzague De Vallois in a statement. “We already have a strong lineup for Xperia Play and its capabilities as a fully enabled smartphone with dedicated gaming controls make this device one powerful contender in the gaming space.” The Xperia Play features a slide-up screen revealing a directional pad and buttons patterned after the original Sony PlayStation controller, as well as a touchpad to emulate two analog sticks. All Android games will be playable on the device, as well as a selection of classic PlayStation 1 titles and original titles that make use of the device's controls. Gameloft will have ten titles ready for the Xperia Play's launch, including two -- Asphalt 6: Adrenaline and Star Battalion -- that will be bundled with the unit, the company said. The phone is set to launch exclusively on Verizon's network sometime in mid-April in the United States, and March 31 in the UK. Sony has said 50 Play-enhanced titles will be available for the phone's launch.
