Many independent developers find that getting publicity is the most difficult part of developing and launching a game. Indeed, getting coverage requires hard work, knowledge of the industry, a media base, and familiarity with reporters. The trade secret of getting your game published is to intrigue game reporters. Following a few unsophisticated steps will sufficiently increase your chances of getting reviewed.
Guidelines
When writing a game review request, use the following guidelines to create your review pitch:
start by introducing yourself and explaining the reasons why you are contacting the reviewer;
tell him or her what your game is about;
highlight your game’s key features and unique facts;
thank your reporter for the time he or she took to read your email.
Language
When contacting a reporter, be honest and to-the-point. There is no need to write long memoirs; 3-5 sentences describing your game is enough to get your reviewer interested. Being honest, polite, and succinct helps a lot.
Target
And last but not least, carefully select whom you are writing to. Some publications have a submission email set up for game review requests, others recommend to send it to editors, depending on the platform they specialize on. Pitching your game to the right people will help you to maximize your results, look professional, and save time.
