PS3 Tops Japanese Hardware Charts Following Sales Surge

Sony's PlayStation 3 broke the handheld dominance of the weekly Japanese hardware charts this week, outselling both the 3DS and the PSP. For the week ended September 11, data from tracking firm Media Create, and as reported by NeoGAF, showed that the Sony home console saw its sales nearly double compared to the previous week, with a total of 64,786 consoles sold overall. The surge in PS3 sales comes in the same week that highly anticipated RPG Tales of Xillia was released for the system, selling over half a million copies in its first week. Sales of the Nintendo 3DS continued to drop following the August 12 price drop, although less rapidly than in previous weeks, suggesting that it is close to leveling out. 49,076 3DS handhelds were sold in total. As for the rest of the charts, every other console saw a decline in sales. The PSP dropped around 5,000 units compared to the previous week, while the Wii dropped a more reasonable 1,000 units. The DS also saw a sales drop of around 1,000 units week-on-week, while both the PS2 and Xbox 360 saw a minute drop of around 10 units each.
