Mobile device development company Qualcomm will add motion controls to its Snapdragon smartphone processor thanks to the acquisition of some of GestureTek's technologies and staff, the company said Monday. According to the Qualcomm, it has acquired "certain assets" from the gesture recognition research & development company, namely intellectual property assets related to gesture controls and unspecified "key engineering resources." Gesture recognition tech from the deal will be integrated into Qualcomm's current and next-generation Snapdragon processors, the company said. This enables its manufacturing partners to produce products such as smartphones, tablets and home entertainment devices -- including games for those devices -- that utilize motion controls. "Our acquisition of key technology and assets from GestureTek will strengthen Qualcomm’s smartphone product portfolio and enable our customers to launch products with new and compelling user experiences," said Qualcomm's executive VP and group president Steve Mollenkopf. GestureTek will retain other assets as part of the deal, and will continue to develop gesture-controlled devices for the public display and digitan signage businesses independently.
