Sony is near enough breaking even on each PlayStation 4 console sold, according to a new report from research firm IHS -- not great news, but far better compared to the losses that the company was making on its previous PlayStation 3 console at launch. As reported by AllThingsD, Sony spends around $381 in parts and manufacturing for each PS4 console, according to an in-depth teardown of the hardware -- although other costs, such as shipping costs, are not taken into account with this breakdown. This means that the company will be nearly breaking even on each console sale, in terms of parts and manufacturing, compared to the $399 retail price to the consumer. Compared to the $805 it cost to build the PS3 at launch, with a retail price of $599, it's safe to say the hardware sales margins aren't so drastic this time around. The full breakdown is at AllThingsD.
