Valve will start offering sign-ups for free Vive VR dev kits next week, Ars Technica reports. Valve spokesman Doug Lombardi told Ars that "more info and 'sign up' forms will be available to all interested developers, big or small, via a new site coming soon" -- as early as next week, if possible.

There's no doubt that the number of kits will be extremely limited, however. Currently, a small number of developers, handpicked by Valve, have already been seeded with Vive dev kits. The good news: The new wave of kits (which include controllers and base stations, too) will be free "at least initially," Lombardi told Ars.

The Vive VR headset and controller is developed in collaboration with Taiwanese smartphone maker HTC. The headset made its public debut at GDC this month, and wowed the press and developers -- including our editor-in-chief Kris Graft, who, after trying the Vive, wrote "the promise of VR is finally beginning to be fulfilled in a meaningful way."
